What social justice causes are you involved in? Could you describe what work you’ve done in those areas?
I am involved with police reform, climate change and green energy reform, and racial and social justice. I’ve written multiple letters to big oil and energy companies like Shell, Exxon, and BP about their carbon footprint and contacted local and state government officials to reform police funding. I’ve also phone-banked for civil rights organizations like Color of Change and the ACLU for voter registration and the HEROES Act.
Why are you involved with these issues?
I believe we as a nation need to reform our way of thinking to create a better democracy that actually benefits the hard-working individuals who have been subjected to racism all their lives. I also believe that the rich need to be held accountable for actions that they committed, many of which have fueled the fire of systemic racism and the destruction of democracy. And we need a healthier planet, as it is the only home we truly have.
When did you start getting involved? When did you realize these were issues you wanted to address?
I’ve always wanted to address societally prevalent issues. However, I was not sure how to go about it. If I am going to be brutally honest, I was on the fence for many issues, as I wasn’t sure what to do. But when I attended the virtual 2020 ACLU Advocacy Institute for high schoolers, I learned many valuable lessons about advocacy.
